No Holidays For The Farmer! E.I. Medical Imaging Recognizes A Hero

In America we recently celebrated the 4th of July holiday, or Independence Day, and for some of us we even enjoyed an extra few days off of work since the holiday fell on a Thursday allowing for a day off on Friday and of course, the weekend.

This was a great celebration in my family as well because of the fact that I have a son celebrating his birthday on July 4 and my wife celebrates her birthday the day after.  To say the least, we had a grand time with birthday cakes, fireworks and some mouth watering BBQ along with our time off on the long holiday weekend.

We live in a rural area of Colorado, North of Denver, and we call it "farm country" mainly due to the fact that our suburban style neighborhood shares the area with a dairy farm next door.  I can still remember when we purchased the house, the promise of the salesperson at the time indicating that the farm would "soon be moving out to the country". 12 years later we still know which way the breeze is coming from at times (I know...it smells like money). I digress.

My birthday boy and I had a discussion about the celebration of Independence Day and the fact that I was home from work on a holiday.  He asked if everyone else in the working world was able to spend extra time at home with their families.  He had a quizzical look on his face when I told him that not everyone gets to take time off work on a holiday. I explained the fact that people like the police and fire rescue workers and others must remain at their posts and serve the people in emergencies and they have to be ready to work when something happens or when the people need them.  It wasn't until that breeze I spoke of earlier mixed with my BBQ smoker that I realized not only does the emergency worker not have holidays, but the farmer is not afforded the luxury of a day off. I told my son that farmers serve us much in the same way that the other people do in that they too must be on duty.

My son asked about holidays like Christmas and other special occasions and I continued to inform him that cows and other animals and crops don't have holidays or days off.  I mentioned that no matter what happens, a farmer has to milk his cows and feed his livestock and harvest his crops. My son looked at me for a moment and as I expected he remarked, "Thank God we have farmers."

I remembered the Dodge Ram advertisement during the Super Bowl and I think this sums up my thoughts and those of my son. Thank God for farmers.  Here is hoping that some of you have a little time to yourselves.
