The Discovery Channel is celebrating shark week this week from August 4-9, 2013, so we thought we would hop on that bandwagon and celebrate a little shark week ourselves here at E.I. Medical Imaging.
We began working with the OCEARCH team in 2013 on their research and program tracking Great White Sharks in the OCEARCH Jax expedition. They are now working on another expedition called the Cape Cod Expedition. You can follow along with their expedition on Facebook and the hashtag on Twitter is #ExpeditionCapeCod. On this expedition, the lab at the University of North Florida has been invited to ultrasound mature female great white sharks with OCEARCH and Fischer Productions, as they did back in March with the Jax expedition.
OCEARCH began the expedition on August 1 and they are on their quest for sharks for 30 days. The lab at the University intends to attend for the entire month of August, rotating staff on a weekly basis. We will provide information as it pertains to the expedition and our Ibex® Portable Ultrasound System when we get news of the first capture and testing. It sounds very exciting and I know the folks at OCEARCH have had some great exposure in the media.
Our company has provided the the use of the CL 3.8 transducer for their use for scanning the captured sharks. We are hoping that if the trip is successful we will get some footage of them scanning a female great white shark to determine if the shark is pregnant!
